There are three types of tools provided at the start of each level, if you lose sight of them from the edge of the map they will disappear for the level. There will be an exclamation warning above the tool if it is nearing the edge of the map to remind you.
Types of tools
Pickaxe- for mining iron
Axe/ Hatchet - Chopping wood
Bucket- for collecting and storing water
