The miner wagon automatically harvests adjacent resources that are sideways to its position. When powered by iron, it will periodically launch two shockwaves outward – one to each side of the wagon – which damage all trees and rocks in their way, up to a set, upgradeable distance. Aesthetic particles jump up from and then fall back down to the ground during the shockwaves. Its gears will also turn when it is powered.
Mining shockwaves can travel diagonally as the train turns on its tracks.
Strategy
Because it only cuts to the sides, not to the front, you still need to build a two-tile path forward (one for the train tracks and another for worker movement), but it can be very effective when the train has traveled into a resource-dense path. If it hasn't been upgraded yet, you may like to try to set the track as close to harvestable resources as possible to maximize its efficiency. It can also be positioned to cut paths through dense resources to reach distant bolts on the map more efficiently.
Be careful, because of the reach of the mining shockwave, the wagon may unintentionally free robbers or animals who were otherwise unreachable, so timing when to power it with iron can be critical.
